Dr. Wade was instrumental in the creation of the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety and in his honour MIPS established an award in his name in 2005, to recognize local excellence in the important work of patient safety. At the MIPS 10th anniversary in 2014, Dr. Wade was given a Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize his career long dedication to patient safety in Manitoba, Canada and internationally.

The Dr. John Wade Patient Safety Initiatives Grant provides funds to encourage small projects in support of patient safety initiatives in Manitoba. It is open to MIPS’ member organizations, individuals, secondary schools, colleges, and post-secondary organizations, as well as community-based organizations.

Dr. Wade chaired the Royal College Health and Public Policy committee and spearheaded the internationally recognized CanMeds initiative. As professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesia, the department was instrumental in developing the Canadian Anesthesia Guidelines to Practice, which dramatically improved the outcomes of anesthesia.

He has been Vice President of Medical Services at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Dean of Medicine at the University of Manitoba, and has served as Deputy Minister of Health in Manitoba from 1995 to 1997.

He chaired the National Steering committee on Patient Safety, and presented the Committee’s final report “Building a Safer System – A National Integrated Strategy for Canadian Health Care”.

In December, 2003, Dr. Wade was appointed as a member and Chair of the Founding Board of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute.

At present, he is a Professor Emeritus of Community Medicine and Anesthesia at the University of Manitoba; Dean Emeritus of the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine; Past Chair of the Board of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority; Assistant Executive Director of the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation and serves on several boards.
